“When the World Was at War We Kept Dancing” is the eleventh song from Lana’s fifth studio album, which metaphorically tells the story of American citizens being aware of the problems United States is facing.
She described the tone of the song as “very dark and doesn’t lead to a fucking happy feeling” trying to contemplate the ideas she sings about whether “it’s the end of America” as it’s known nowadays, or simply “the end of an era”.
Questioning the leadership, the risks, and the directions the President of USA has taken during his few months of term.
Lana went back and forth in keeping it in the record because “she didn’t want it there if it would make people feel worse instead of better”. The title was revealed during an interview with Flaunt Magazine.
The lyrics were a reminder not to shut down or shut off, or just don’t talk about things. It was more like stay vigilant and keep dancing.
