“White Mustang” is thematically similar to “Groupie Love,” another Lust for Life track that looks at a relationship between Lana and a musician. Though at first she seemed just like a groupie who fell in love, Lana later realized her lover won’t change his reckless behaviour.
Lana conjures a “White Mustang,” a powerful and fast car. A white mustang appears in her “Born to Die” music video. Lana teased snippets of the song via Instagram on June 8th and July 6th and 20th.
Lana spoke about the song with Zane Lowe on Beats 1;
It was too happy. We’re not there yet…I’m getting to the place that I was singing about in Yosemite, and I’m just not there yet. Like, at the end of the record, I wrote Cherry and White Mustang, which, I felt like I even sounded kind of annoyed in these tracks, which I’m not really used to hearing myself sound that way musically, and I realized, like, I think I thought by the end of this record I’d be in a totally different spot. Like, a little bit of a 180, like, we’re in this really, super clear zone, and then I realized I’m still figuring out so much stuff…
