The song title, The Story of O.J., refers to OJ Simpson the former football player who was accused and acquitted of killing two people.
The trial was called the trial of the century due to the massive amount of public attention and scandal related to the celebrity of the accused as well as the strained relationship between the black community of LA and the LAPD.
The song features a sample of the song “Four Women” by Nina Simone, which tells the story of four black women with different skin tones and the struggles they faced.
The allusion to Simone’s four women in the chorus suggests that regardless of whether one is wealthy or poor, light skinned or dark, one’s blackness is a more relevant marker in a racist society.
Jay-Z spoke about the song on iHeart Radio, here is what he said;
‘The Story of OJ’ is really a song about we as a culture, having a plan, how we’re gonna push this forward. We all make money, and then we all lose money, as artists especially. But how, when you have some type of success, to transform that into something bigger.
