JAY-Z – Moonlight

“Moonlight” is inspired by the 2016 Oscar nominee of the same name. The movie, Moonlight, emphasizes the importance of embracing one’s racial and sexual identity and was incorrectly announced as Best Picture.

It also functions as a critique of younger rappers and how often their actions can be perceived to keep black people down.

In it No I.D. samples “Fu-Gee-La” by Fugees. Nas and DJ Khaled recently sampled the iconic Lauryn Hill song on “Nas Album Done”

Jay-Z spoke about the song on iHeart Radio, here is what he said;

The hook is ‘We stuck in La La Land/Even if we win, we gonna lose.’ It’s like a subtle nod to La La Land winning the Oscar, and then having to give it to Moonlight. It’s really a commentary on the culture and where we’re going.
